What Is Option Trading and How It Works

Option trading is a way to speculate on the price movement of an asset, such as a stock, index, commodity, or currency pair, without owning the asset itself. You choose whether the price will rise or fall within a set time. If your view is correct when the time ends, you receive a payout. If it is not, you lose the amount you risked on that trade.

On the platforms compared on this page, the payout is fixed as a percentage of your stake. For example, a broker may offer up to 90% or 95% of the amount you put in. The minimum trade size can be as low as 0.35 USD on one platform and 1 USD on several others. This means you can start with small positions while you learn.

The key point for a beginner in India is that option trading here is not the same as exchange-traded options on NSE or BSE. The brokers listed in this guide offer fixed-time contracts on their own platforms. The Reserve Bank of India does not license offshore forex platforms or fixed-time contracts. You should understand this distinction before you deposit any money.

Trading Courses for Beginners in India

Many Indian traders look for a free trading course for beginners or an online trading course for beginners before they open a live account. A good course should explain how fixed-time contracts work, how to read a payout table, and how to manage the amount you risk on each trade. It should not promise that you will earn a certain income.

There are also searches for an option trading book in Hindi PDF free download. While a Hindi book can help you understand the basics, make sure the material matches the platform you actually use. Some books describe exchange-traded options, which have different rules, margins, and expiry times than the fixed-time contracts offered by the brokers on this page.

If you are looking for a quant trading course, a future and options trading course, or a forex trading course, check whether the course covers the Indian payment environment. A course that only teaches US broker sign-up steps will not help you when your Indian card is declined or when you need to use UPI through a payment partner. The best option trading course in India is one that explains the practical steps for Indian residents.

Licences, Registers, and Warnings in India

The Reserve Bank of India is the authority that deals with authorised persons dealing in foreign exchange and the electronic trading platforms they may use, under FEMA. The RBI does not license offshore forex platforms or fixed-time contracts. In November 2025, the RBI referred to its own Alert List of entities not authorised to deal in foreign exchange under FEMA or to operate an electronic trading platform. The list contained 95 entities as of 19.11.2025, and the RBI states the list is not exhaustive. A resident trading outside permitted purposes or on an unauthorised platform is liable under FEMA.

Among the brokers we track, Deriv holds licences on record from MFSA 70156, Labuan FSA MB/18/0024, and VFSC company No. 14556. Pocket Option holds a licence from MISA (Mwali) T2022086, but it also has warnings on record from the FCA, Consob, and CFTC. IQ Option holds CySEC 247/14 (EEA). Olymp Trade holds a VFSC company No. 40131 (Aollikus Limited) and is a member of the Financial Commission. Binomo holds IFC (FinaCom) Category A. Expert Option is a member of the Financial Commission.

Quotex and Exnova have no licence found in any register we read. BinaryCent has no licence found in any register we read, and it has warnings on record from the VFSC notice of fraud, the CFTC red list, the AMF blacklist, and the FMA NZ warning. Exnova has withdrawal complaints and no regulator on record. These are facts you should weigh before you deposit. The RBI Alert List is the reference point for Indian residents.

Payment Routes and Practical Steps for Indian Traders

The currency on these platforms is the rupee (INR), but most brokers quote minimum deposits in USD. The payment routes available are UPI, bank transfer, cards, and USDT. UPI is how most deposits here are made, usually through a payment partner rather than the platform itself. Bank transfer means IMPS or NEFT from any Indian bank. Cards are Visa and Mastercard, subject to your bank's international transaction limit. USDT is usually TRC-20, and it is the route traders fall back on when a card is declined.

Before you deposit, check the broker's minimum deposit against the payment route you plan to use. A 10 USD deposit via UPI may be processed quickly through a payment partner, but a card deposit may be blocked by your bank. If that happens, USDT is often the alternative, but it adds an extra step because you first need to buy USDT from an exchange.

If you are taking a trading course in Chennai or a trading course in Kolkata, ask the instructor to show you a real deposit and withdrawal on a live account using an Indian payment route. A course that only shows a demo account will not prepare you for the moment your bank declines a transaction. The practical steps matter as much as the theory.
